Paul Tan

Partner, Cavenagh Law, Singapore

Paul Tan is a commercial litigation and international arbitration (both commercial and investor state) specialist. His practice focusses on managing disputes across South East Asia, with deep experience advising on complex issues of public and private international law. He advises a wide range of clients, including leading multinational organisations, global insurers, financial institutions and Asian governments. He heads the litigation practice for South East Asia.

Paul acts as lead counsel before international arbitral tribunals, the Singapore International Commercial Court, and arbitration-related litigation. Recent experience includes successfully advising on the setting-aside of a treaty award for an African sovereign before the Singapore courts, defending a government against a multi-billion claim on an oil exploration service contract, and leading a successful claim for losses under a complex non-recourse loan agreement before the Singapore International Commercial Court.

Paul is a member of the Professional Affairs Committee of the Singapore Academy of Law and is an elected council member of the Law Society of Singapore. He is also a member of the Law Society of Singapore's Economic Action Council to strengthen and expand the business of law firms and is also leading efforts to encourage best practices against bullying and harassment in the workplace. He is also a commission member of the ICC's Belt-and-Road Initiative.

Paul is ranked as a Band 1 "leading individual" for arbitration by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific. He has also been named as Asialaw / Euromoney's "Dispute Star of the Year - Singapore".
